For the New Year

January 2005

A new year, a new period of time, lies ahead of us. We have concluded the old year with thankfulness, and now look into the time ahead with expectation. We have reason to rejoice because we are not embarking on a journey into the unknown. The eye of God also watches over our journey into the future. The psalmist speaks to the point: "But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing" (cf. Psalm 34:11). For as long as God's people of old sought the Lord during their journey through the desert, they had everything they needed.

So what does it mean to seek the Lord? To follow joyfully. And if we do this we will find it indispensable to hear His word and adjust our lives in accordance with it. We will also gladly bring our sacrifices in the certainty that an existence without divine blessing and favour would be an empty and barren one. We also pray to our heavenly Father every day and thereby cultivate an intimate fellowship with Him. By observing these principles we will seek and find the Lord every day and so assure ourselves of His soothing presence. And our heavenly Father will give us everything we need to boot.

In the Psalms this is described as follows: "The Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly" (cf. Psalm 84:12). God's grace is a wonderful possession. The products of this grace are our election, the holy sacraments, and the divine promises for His children. The most important of these promises is the return of Christ. These glorious gifts will assure us a wonderful future in the eternal realms where God and His Son rule.

I wish you a most blessed New Year 2005, <br/> R. Fehr
