For the New Year

January 1998

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8)

It is something very specific to man that he always wants to look into the future. Many people at the threshold of a new year ask themselves what it will bring. And then oracles are consulted and assumptions are made about this and that. Many wishes are associated with the new year, and great hopes are placed in the future.

We look to the new year with a watchful spirit, and are guided by unchanging, immortal values that will remain in all eternity. They have their origin and permanence in the omnipotence of God, and find their living expression in the virtues of his son. Our faith is founded on solid ground: on Jesus Christ. With him we continue striding joyfully and steadfastly forward. His current, visible form in his servants and his constant activity through the Holy Spirit will bring us safely and surely through the time ahead.

The gospel of Christ conveys gladness and joy; it brings the fulfilment of all wishes that can be summed up in one phrase: participation in the First Resurrection!

May the awareness within us become even stronger in the time ahead that our faith and all the hopes we associate with it will come to blissful fulfilment when we remain firmly founded on the rock that is Jesus Christ.

With best wishes for the New Year,<br/>
