Triumph of God's Love

April 1997

Good Friday, Easter and Ascension - these three events cannot be separated from each other. The sufferings on Good Friday are followed by the joys of Easter, and only if the resurrected life of Christ is manifest is it possible to celebrate Ascension. The power to go through a Good Friday, even today, lies in a strong faith that has overcome this world. For faith is able to bring sacrifice. In life resurrected, hope is revealed, and in Ascension, God's love exults.

Faith, hope, love! When the Lord Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, he took Peter, James and John along with him, the three disciples, who in their nature embodied faith, hope and love. On the mountain Moses and Elijah appeared, the representatives of unshakeable faith and divine ardent zeal. As at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, once again the voice from heaven was to be heard: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

The voice from heaven referred to these events, when the Lord Jesus asked the Father on the days before Good Friday: "Father, glorify thy name." And the voice announced: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." When was this promise fulfilled? At the resurrection of Jesus at Easter and at his Ascension, when the Son of God was glorified in a most conclusive manner. Before this, however, he had to experience moments that were not pleasant. For this reason he said: "Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour!"

We, too, have to experience many things that are unpleasant: sickness, hostility, injustice, sorrows and burdens. Then we also may say: "Now is my soul troubled" and ask "Father, save me from this hour." May we, however, continually recognise in all things the fashioning and governing hand of God and realise that such hours serve for our purification and help us come to a more profound faith.

And then our faith helps us through that "Good Friday", and we will enter into the joy of Easter, and, in this living hope, we will experience the triumph of divine love: Ascension!

Most sincerely,<br/>
