An example in faithfulness

August 2018

Of all the believers to distinguish themselves through their faithfulness to God, we are most often reminded of examples from the old covenant: Moses, Joshua, Caleb, Daniel, the three men in the fiery furnace, or David, just to mention a few.

It is already a little more of a challenge to find examples from the New Testament. And yet there is one person who must definitely be mentioned in this context: Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was told that she would give birth to the Son of the Most High, whom God would give the throne of His father David. He would be King and His kingdom would have no end. And then Mary finds herself beneath a cross one day and has to look on as her Son finally breathes His last under great torment. Instead of kingship and sovereign rule on the throne of David, He is given the shameful end usually reserved for serious criminals. Can you imagine what thoughts must have gone through the mind of the mother of Jesus at that moment? But Mary remained undeterred. She remained faithful. She remained with the disciples in Jerusalem and waited with them for the outpouring of the Spirit. An example in faithfulness.
