Sympathy for all earthquake victims

31.05.2006

Zurich. "Our hearts are moved with great sympathy for all victims of the earthquake in Yogyakarta”—Chief Apostle Wilhelm Leber, the international leader of the New Apostolic Church, expressed his feelings over the latest natural disaster in Indonesia with great emotion.

The number of casualties is currently estimated at around 5,700. Unfortunately it may well be that the number of casualties will still increase, as there is little hope of finding any more survivors under the rubble. The earthquake, which occurred early Saturday morning, had a magnitude of 6.3 and surprised many people in their sleep.

“Once again Indonesia has been the target of a terrible natural disaster,” said the Chief Apostle. “We pray for all those who have been affected!” The international Church president went on to confirm that the Church would offer help within the context of its means, or support international relief efforts. The news from the New Apostolic congregations in and around Yogyakarta is not good either: it is feared that some of our brethren from the area have also lost their lives. This region is home to more than 2,500 New Apostolic Christians in nearly 20 congregations. Some New Apostolic Church buildings have been completely destroyed.
