The Most Valuable Pearl

February 2001

The greatest that mankind can acquire on earth is to become a child of God. The Lord Jesus once compared the Kingdom of Heaven unto a merchant who sought good pearls. After he had found a particularly precious pearl, he went and sold all that he had, and acquired this valuable piece of jewellery. (Matthew 13:45-46).

Mankind seeks all kinds of things: some seek the meaning of life, fulfillment in their existence, higher values; others seek love and recognition, still others seek honour and fame, power, influence and possessions. They chase after hundreds of things and at times even attain the one and the other, and are therefore joyful for a moment. Many of these things have a certain value for the natural life, but what remains of it?

We - like the merchant in Jesus's parable - have found precious pearls. By grace we can be called children of God. Now it is very important to carefully preserve these pearls. We could lose them, because we are indifferent and careless, they could be stolen, because doubt and aggravations have chiselled out the door to our treasure chamber of faith, we could give them away, because we find other "jewels" more beautiful and attractive.

Some have placed jewels into the grave with the dead, other have given money or food and drink along for their long "journey to the realm of the dead". This may have been well-intentioned, but it served no purpose. Nothing could be taken along. When perhaps after several centuries the tombs were opened and the jewels and money were found again, all that remained was their historical value for archaeology.

Let us always be aware that our childhood in God represents the most valuable, the most important thing that we possess. While all that is earthly fades away, it remains for all eternity. That is why we direct all our efforts to remain faithful children of God, loved by Jesus and led and guided by our heavenly Father. Then on the day of his return, the Lord will redeem the covenant that he has given us by grace for glory.

With heartfelt greetings,<br/> Yours,

Richard Fehr
