Dangers of our time

September 1998

We are living in the time in which God will complete his redemption work, and we know that the Lord will redeem the elect shortly, they who call to him day and night: Come Lord Jesus! The Son of God himself said quite clearly of what circumstances would exist at his return. He saw in advance the alienation from God and posed the question: "Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" (cf. Luke 18:8)

As we stand before the return of Jesus, many ignore the divine offer of grace in our time, because thousands of other things in their lives have taken on a greater importance. The affirmation of Jesus, "...and knew not until..." (cf Matthew 24:37-39) should count as a reminder for us. Also Jesus' comparison with the time of Lot (Luke 24:37-39) is just as valid a pointer for us today. Of the sons in law of Lot it says: "But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law." (Genesis 19:14). What can we learn of this? Let us never mock what God in his love and mercy says to us.

In Revelation one can read the words to the congregation of Laodicea: "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing" (Revelation 3:17). This attitude of overestimation is still found today. Let us be quite aware that without the grace of God we too are; "wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Let us regard the altar as holy and the warning of the Holy Spirit, that sensitises us to the dangers of our time.

As the Israelites journeyed through the desert, Korah and some others went against the ones that God had decreed as the spiritual leaders of the priesthood; they said to Moses and Aaron: "Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?" (Numbers 16:3). Today too the Lord declares himself for his plan of redemption which is being carried out by the apostles of Jesus and, according to his plan of salvation, will bring it to completion. With his help we will be able to face the dangers of the time and remain following faithfully as we await the return of Jesus who want to find faith on earth on this day.

Most sincerely,<br/>
