Works of Faith

June 1998

When the Apostle James points out that faith without works is dead, just as the body without the spirit (cf. James 2, 26), this also has special significance for the life we lead in faith. How does our faith come about in the first place? It is not just one of God's gifts of grace, because Apostle Paul writes: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10, 17). Faith, therefore, is born and multiplied through God and his word. Whether it lives and develops, however, can be seen in the works of faith.

What then are works of faith? First and foremost, there is hope. In Paul's epistle to the Hebrews we can read: "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)" (Hebrews 10, 23). We firmly believe that the promise Jesus gave that he would come again to receive his own unto himself will be fulfilled, because His words are holy and true.

Another work of faith is oneness. The Lord Jesus prayed that his own may be one (cf. John 17, 11). It is the one outstanding feature of the fellowship of the Children of God that they are bound together throughout the world in oneness of Spirit. This oneness is a source of strength and is taking God's people forward to their goal.

Among the works of faith there is also our love for man's soul and for our neighbour. A lawyer once asked the Lord Jesus to tell him who the neighbour was he was supposed to love in order to fulfil the law. The Son of God answered with the parable of the good Samaritan (cf. Luke 10, 29-37). By loving man's soul and one's neighbour, each of us, on God's behalf, as Samaritans of our times, can help the spiritually beaten.

Yet another work of faith to be mentioned is prayer. The one who prays knowing that God hears his prayer, and prays with all his heart, not only shows that his faith is alive - he also moves heavenly forces. Let us make sure that our faith lives, and that it develops under the Word and Grace of God. The more our faith is alive, the more powerful are its works!

Most sincerely,<br/>
