Healthy Souls

March 1998

Surely it is the wish of all human beings to be healthy. How many would give a fortune for that! The healthy person often does not know what riches he possesses. But what about the longing for spiritual health, for the salvation of the soul? In fact we should be as concerned about our spiritual health at least as much as our physical health. For the soul will ultimately live in eternity, while the body will die.

When Lord Jesus went through villages and cities, the sick were brought to him. "And as many as touched him were made whole." it says in the gospel according to Mark (Mark 6:56). The miracles he performed in those days affected the physical wellbeing of the people. But Jesus Christ had come on earth to redeem people from sin through his sacrifice, giving them spiritual health. Every contact with the Lord contributes to this, and it is possible in many different ways.

Accepting the word of God in faith, for example, is such a contact. "Ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you" Jesus taught his disciples (John 15:3). When we receive grace and forgiveness, we are also in contact with the Lord, which makes us healthy. And in celebrating Holy Communion, we absorb the nature, mind and spirit of Christ within us. Our sacrifices too, the fellowship with the ambassadors of Jesus, and an active prayer life are contacts with the Lord.

But above all else is the love of God that is poured out in us through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Apostle John described it: "God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him" (1. John 4:16). What a unique contact!

Let us be healed through such contacts. A healthy soul is ready and prepared for glory.

Most sincerely,<br/>
