True wealth

April 2019

As Luke reports in the book of Acts, the Apostles testified of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. Their powerful testimony inspired faith: faith in the resurrection and in eternal life. This faith made such an impact on the early Christians that earthly goods and strivings lost a good deal of significance for them. They now had a different priority. They decided to share their possessions with one another such that none of them would have to endure need or want. Their earthly riches, possessions, fortunes, and goods were suddenly not so important anymore. Luke relates that they held all things in common.

“My house, my stocks, my antique collection, my hard-earned savings…” But shouldn’t faith also lead Christians today to think about their earthly goods and the material world from a greater distance and with greater composure? Shouldn’t it enable them to assign less significance to these things?  After all, our true wealth lies elsewhere…
