Artificial insemination

Human life begins with the union of the female egg cell and the male sperm cell.

The Church has no principal reservations concerning artificial insemination as long as it is guaranteed that no fertilised ova are intentionally killed. Artificial insemination should only be performed with married couples and with their own sperm and ova.

The Church has fundamental religious and ethical reservations against surrogate motherhood.

In principle, the Church rejects preimplantation diagnostics (PID) and elective single-embryo transfer (eSET), just as it rejects abortion.

Couples also have the option of adoption open to them.
